Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:
Red Ingoth

Upcoming Hatchings:

Winter is in full swing as the Northwest reaches the middle stages of the cold month, and Dalibor, taking full advantage of a crackdust filled break in Threadfall, is back at it again. Delving into the Southern ice and snow, they have paired with Grove Weyr to fully explore the lands they only slightly uncovered the previous turn during the Jungle Expedition. This, however, will not be a warm and relaxing waltz through the woods; although was it ever that to begin with?

Z'dyn of Iron Baihujinth - Rhia

Jr. Weyrwoman
Jali of Copper Laanasuth - Rii

The first snowfall of the turn was light, with only a thin blanket covering the ground. Lu'ka was outside by the lake, with Selath catching the afternoon rays of sun while it was warmest outside. It had yet to sink into the very cold depths of Dalibor's winter. It was just the beginning. Yet Selath was already missing the summer sun. He had been hatched just before summer, and so Lu'ka knew he would miss it, and probably not be a great fan of winter. He liked sunning more than anything, after all. His second favorite thing to do was swim--well, it stood in competition of flying, perhaps. Ever since Selath had learned to fly, it had been a lot of him learning to do tricks in the air. He was big, though. Not as easily agile or nimble as his smaller clutchsiblings were. Still, for all his size, he was agile and with much practice, more so than most irons, Lu'ka imagined. Size...iron...

Selath was ten months old now, just about. he was constantly growing, so fast that Lu'ka could hardly believe it. It took more time to bathe and oil him with each passing month. Not that he minded. He had never, however, expected to Impresss a large dragon. He'd always pictured himself with a pretty little cyan, friendly little pink...he'd have loved to have had a sport back then. Tiny. Cute. Strangely he'd pictured mostly female dragons. That and blues. Lighter colors, normally. Then he'd gone to his first ever hatching, and walked off the sands with an iron. Selath insisted, always, that he was the best choice. That he was meant to ride a king dragon, and so had been chosen by the very best iron there was. Well, Lu'ka was biased, so he believed Selath was the best iron there ever was. Yet he couldn't bring himself to come to terms with his size nor color. He thought there were so many worthy kingriders, and that had never been something he had envisioned for himself. He didn't even know what he would do if Selath ever caught and chased a queen! What would happen if Selath caught Jali's copper, or Rayna's gold? Would he be chasing those queens? Lu'ka was, first and foremost, too young to have wanted to be Weyrleader or Jr. to one of those lovely women. Just the thought made him turn so red he thought someone would see from all the way across the lake! Still, just the fact that it could happen at all made him nervous and queasy. The fact that he was in a position where he might be able to be a Weyrleader, Jr. or Wingleader someday...the responsibility was not lost on the young man. He hoped Selath stuck to sub-queens or fighters. He really did.

Not only was all this stuff constantly floating around in the poor boy's head, but the fact that he was, for all intents and purposes, untried in the furs. His first time, he was sure, was going to be when Selath chased. The thought was unnerving, even if he'd known it was part of being a dragonrider. It wasn't something he was entirely comfortable with. He was lucky...they had a good eight months, or more, before Selath chased. Maybe he would wait, like some dragons did, until Lu'ka felt more ready for that kind of thing? Still, one day it would happen. And he would wake up next to someone he had maybe only spoken to before. Maybe, were he very lucky, it would be someone he liked a bit? Or a friend who understood and it wouldn't ruin things between them? He didn't know anyone like that. He knew people could take chosen partners to bed. It happened all the time. Yet who would he have for something like that? Hopefully someone, by the time it all went down...

He was back to musing over the fact he would be a kingrider once he graduated though. Selath snoozed, snoring loudly, and he leaned up against the iron's side, staring out over the lake and enjoying the warmth of the hide next to him, and the sunlight beating down. He wondered if the other boy, Maus'en, felt similarly. Or if there were other ironriders in the Weyr who had been where he was. He was clumsy, talked too much, shy around girls, and awkward oftentimes. What about him made him ironrider material? He just didn't see himself that way. Lost in thought, he closed his eyes, beginning to drift off. He didn't even seen B'oh coming.
