Dragon CandidateAge-Out Date:
Summer, 25Personality: creative ; cheerful ; observant ; quiet
Umeral lives a life based in curiosity. Since he was very young he has been excited by learning new things, and though he can't hold a melody on his own or a beat for that matter, he sincerely loves learning new songs from the Harpers. (Thankfully he can follow along well enough when a harper is performing singalongs). Umeral spends much of his free time in the archive rooms poring over records and learning what he can. He has a particular interest in politics, finding the intricacies of diplomacy fascinating. Because of this, he spends a good deal of his time listening and observing the people around him. It's lucky for them that he can keep a secret, because Umeral has heard more than a few juicy ones in his turns of quiet observation. He has yet to hear anything important enough to involve the leadership, and he genuinely has no iea what he will do if he ever does overhear something that important.
Umeral may be utterly incapable of harpering, but he is still a creative creature. He enjoys writing and drawing, and when he is quietly listening to those around him he is often sketching away. He is quite talented at this particular skill, and his parents indulge him in this. They do not often pay him mind, busy with their dragons as they are, but they gift him paper and drawing utensils during major holidays such as Turnover, first gather day of the season, his birthing day… things of those types.
Umeral is of cheerful, quiet demeanor. He is generally in a good mood. He's the sort who happily goes to parties and says hardly a word, opting instead to dance wordlessly or simply sit and peoplewatch (as is his established hobby).
Umeral's cheerfulness is often a point of pique for others as he can be inappropriately cheerful. Umeral doesn't do sad or angry, and as a result, while he is great at listening in people-watching, he is NOT
great at listening in acting as a shoulder to lean on. Likewise, his people-watching is liable to get him into trouble because he tends to find out more information than is reasonable for him to know. In essence, his curiosity bleeds straight into nosiness.Appearance: Brown hair ; brown eyes ; still growing ; still short ; a smidge stocky
There is nothing particularly interesting about Umeral's appearance. He doesn't stand out except perhaps for still being a half head shorter than most of his agegroup. He is of stocky build, but so was his father ‘til he was a young man. Like his father, Umeral doesn't expect to grow beyond average, though he is skeptical that he'll be as slender as his father. After all, his mother is built of sturdier stuff. Umeral has nondescript brown hair that is cropped rider short out of convenience, and has nondescript brown eyes that are usually glinting with curiosity.
Umeral has no particularly interesting scars. His features are decidedly “average,” the standard Pernese almond eyes and Pernese tanned skin, his nose is proportional to his face but not especially crooked or straight. His lips aren't especially full, nor are they particularly thin. His cheekbones are slightly high, and he has a very slight underbite that doesn't bother him or impact his ability to eat. His hands and feet are proportional to his young body, suggesting that while he is still growing, he may not yet grow much.Family:

Umeral hasn't lived a very interesting life. A standard Weyrbrat upbringing, really, spending his time playing with his fellows and doing chores and learning his teaching ballads from the Harpers. He spent very little time with his parents who firmly believe in the ageold tradition of creche raising their child, allowing as much exposure to other children and adults as possible. He was very young when he figured out how much he enjoyed just listening and watching others around him. He had plenty of friends in the creche, but he was known as the quiet friend.
The first Hatching his parents brought him to occurred in the sixth turn of the Pass, when he was just three turns old. He still remembers the awe and shock of the audience when the first burgundies Hatched, and it is his earliest memory, even before the introduction of his new baby brother, Azumal, at age four. The baby was likewise raised in the creche, and the two gradually became very close as they grew. Umeral feels extremely protective of Azu, though he lets his brother stumble as he did at his age. He has always felt incredibly adult compared to Azu, no matter how silly that idea might be.
When he was 8, Umeral began doodling when he got the chance. He did so enough to get his parent's attention, and they began providing him with materials to draw with. His skills continued to improve, albeit nothing significantly special.
Umeral almost doubted wanting to become a Candidate when during his seventh turn Candidates began to wear armor at Hatchings. It would take turns for Umeral to start feeling comfortable with the idea, and so at age ten he turned down Candidacy for a time. He didn't regret it, given the assault of eggs that occurred the turn he would have become a Candidate. He didn't feel ready to go through the process of being screened, and being the quiet observant type, Umeral would rather wait patiently by the sidelines, and wait he did. By age 15, however, Umeral had matured considerably and felt ready to undergo Candidacy, much to the pride of his parents. They were worried, as they both came from long lines of dragonriders.
At age 15, he is getting rather adept at his little miniature craft, but ultimately Umeral now wants what almost every Weyrbrat wants: to Impress his own dragon.Adoption Preference:
Vellinuth [#000415] - Impressed to Um'al (Eric)
Vellinuth is a bit of a sneakthief, but in a playful way. He'll try to do a bit of distraction, smoke and mirrors, and then yoink something away from his target - usually food. It's just a game, though, and he really enjoys more sorts of games than just being sneaky. Games that require physical skill are more to his preference, but not just brute force. He likes to have a little
bit of intelligence involved, here. He's an intelligent, quietly inquisitive dragon.
He is a social creature and likes being around others, whether it's as a listener or a talker - he's a bit more gregarious than blacks usually are, but it's in a thoughtful way. He's very sensitive to the social cues around him and understands that there's a time and a place for all things; after all, you don't laugh at a funeral, or start a fight at a wedding. He's quiet about his affections, but he likes physical contact - especially having his muzzle scratched.
Vellinuth is big on using his mouth and nose like others might use a forefoot - he likes to flick or toss things using his muzzle, or catch them in his mouth, and he's really quite good at it. Catch is basically his favorite game of all and he'll definitely use it as a method of getting someone's attention or to lighten the mood. He prefers to eat by getting a piece of meat on his muzzle, tossing it up in the air, and snapping it up. Awmph.Appearance
Vellinuth has an elongated, slightly curved muzzle that's easily longer than the rest of his head by comparison. His long, thick neck blends into a more slender body, while his wings are short and wide and his tail short and stumpy. His body is a dark charcoal color, with deeper black on his wings. He has a streak of very dark red running down his neck to his chest, and another dark red streak on the underside of his upper tail. Around his eyes and running down under his jaw at the base of his muzzle is a patch of dark blue.Adult Length
18.5 feetWhy Um'al
I see Um'al and Vellinuth as having a kind of buddy-buddy thing going on. They're very alike in some ways, like how they're both kind of upbeat and like being around people. Um'al can definitely keep Vellinuth entertained, and Vellinuth can provide some of the social sensitivity that Um'al is lacking.

|Satisfied with his current work, the black left the purple and indigo to linger, moving forward into the remaining candidates. There were a lot of empty spaces left between them, now. He couldn't exactly be stealthy. But that was alright, because he had bigger things to do than be stealthy now. Giving a honk of delight, he stopped in front of his chosen.|
You're worrying, Um'al, because you don't think you have what it takes. You know what? You can get it, still. So they're looking down on you now. Distract them all, and when they look back again, you'll be everything they thought you couldn't be. I'll help. I'm Vellinuth.
