Personality: Despite his terrible history of bad luck, Jaquin is a surprisingly possitive person. He greets nearly everyone and everything with a smile and youthful enthusiasm. He loves experiencing and trying new things whenever he can. He doesn't want to let the pain of his past dragged him down and does everything he can to make the best even in a bad situation. While he secretly blames himself when things go wrong, even when they are clearly not his fault, he strives to help however he can to make it right again. Sometimes to the deteriment of his own health and well being. He doesn't believe giving into pain and sorrow will solve his problems and puts on a brave face whenever possible.
He also has a never ending thirst for knowledge, especially when it comes to Healing, and can spend long hours studying without a break, often forgetting to eat or rest. He hopes to one day earn his Journeyman ranking in his craft, though he knows being a candidate and possibly Impressing will slow down that goal. He feels that Healing is the only way to make up for the hurt he feels he has caused others. It also helps to try and keep himself in once piece when he is ill or injured, which is often.
Jaquin is friendly and welcoming to nearly everyone he meets, but he rarely makes close friendships. Afraid his bad luck will cause him to lose anyone too close to him, as it has in the past, he tries to keep himself at a distance. He hides behind smiles and dismisses his own importance with laughter. He often places others before himself, not necessarily because he cares for them more, but because he truly does not believe he is actually worth it. A life of harsh lessons and realities have given him a rather low opinion of his own well being. While he is far from suicidal, he will stupidly risk his life and health if he feels it is needed for a greater good.
Appearance: Jaquin is of average height and build and generally looks unremarkable at first glance. His hair is soft brown and hangs a bit long around his ears. His eyes are a bright green and his face has a gentle, rounded look. He tends to wear long sleeves and pants to hide numerous scars on his arms, legs, and chests, many of which are from accidents or dragon hatchings. He is not the strongest or fastest young man, being prone to tripping and running out of breath. He also tends to get sick easily, especially in winter.

(Spring 01) Jaquin's life did not have the best start. His mother, Jaqlya, went into early labor as the first Threadfall of the Pass began. While the air above Telgar Hold was filled with the destructive Fall, Jaqlya gave birth to twins boys, Ellyan and Jaquin. Both boys are weak and sickly at birth. Despite the efforts of a Healer, Ellyan dies less than a week later, leaving Jaquin an only child.
Both Jaqlya her husband, Elruin, lived in one of the cotholds surrounding Telgar and work as laborers and assistants to some of the Smiths. They were good parents and loved their new son deeply. Jaquin was a sickly child when he was young, prone to illness and not growing as fast or as strong as others his age. Despite this, he proved to be a happy and curious boy who loved to explore and see new things.
(Summer 05) Tragedy struck the family again when Jaquin was four turns old. Their home and several others nearby were struck by a terrible fire. No one was quite sure how the fire began, but it destroyed many homes and took several lives, including both Jaquin's parents. Jaquin himself amazingly survived, though he suffered from a cough from the smoke for several months. Once the Healer's determined he was well enough to travel, he was sent to live with his Aunt and Uncle at Nabol Hold.
Nabol was a harder place to grow up. Jaquin's Aunt, Uncle, and cousins treated him fairly, but lacked the love and attention his parents had. He was mostly ignored except to be given chores to do or sent to lessons. Unfortunately, he soon proved to be highly accident and trouble prone. Usually things that happened weren't his fault, he just always seemed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Like walking by a paddock when some of the runners got loose and broke his arm. Or burning his hand when a pot boiled over. Or nearly drowning when trying to go fishing. Or getting his hair caught in sap while climbing, then cutting his ear trying to get free, and finishing by falling out of the tree and breaking his leg.
(AU 09) Jaquin's Aunt and Uncle found his constant injury and accidents a pain, but generally accepted it. His Uncle said he was born under a bad sign and bad luck just followed him, like his parents dying. Unfortunately, this opinion of acceptance changed a few turns later. When he was 8 turns old, his new family decided it was a good time to introduce him to mine work, which was what most of the family did. He was sent to follow his older cousin and learn his way around and to carry messages, food and the like to the workers.
Of course, given his luck, that was the day the mine suffered a terrible collapse. Many of the miners were trapped or injured, and a few even died. Most sadly, Jaquin's cousin, who was only 13 herself, was killed. Jaquin suffered from numerous bruises and a concussion, but survived much to his shame. He blamed himself for the accident, since to his young mind, he always brought bad luck. Unfortunately his adopted family didn't help. Understandably devestated by the loss of their youngest daughter, his Aunt and Uncle ignored him more than ever, treating him as nothing more than a burden they were stuck with out of duty.
(Winter 11) When he was ten turns old, no one argued with his decision to leave Nabol Hold. He had decided to apply to become a Healer, so he could help those hurt by his bad luck. He had already been working with the local Healers since the accident and had received a recommendation to Apprentice at the Hall. His Aunt and Uncle could barely disguise their relief to be rid of him, though they did provide him with money and supplies for the trip. He traveled with a Trader Caravan that was making its way to the small cotholds surrounding Fort Hold, close enough that he could make it the rest of the way from there.
During the trip, he met a girl his age named Osario, who he enjoyed talking with. She had seen more of Pern than he ever had and her interest in fashion was fun. They were halfway to Fort when the mother of all storms struck. Luckily he was able to take shelter with the rest of the Traders. Luckily no one was killed, though several animals were lost and the delay cut into the caravan's profits. Jaquin was very apologetic throughout the whole ordeal. Of course he could not control the weather, but he still felt it was his fate to have bad things happen where ever he went. When spring finally came and they finally reached the area around Fort, Jaquin bid his new friends goodbye and went on his way.
Life at the Healer's Hall was comparatively quiet. He spent most of the time studying, practicing, and doing chores. He was still prone to accidents and tended to get sick easy, but being in a place full of Healer's did have its advantages. Though providing a test subject for his fellow students to practice on all the time was less than fun.
(Summer 13) Now twelve turns old, Jaquin volunteered to travel with one of the Master Healers and some other apprentices for some field practice at Southern Boll Hold to the South. He was looking forward to getting to see the ocean up close, though given his history, wisely decided to stay away from the boats. Unfortunately, his luck followed him anyway. Doomfall came, devestating Holds and Weyrs all across Pern. Southern Boll lost much of its fleet of ships and many lives were lost, including two of the other apprentices who were caught trying to rescue some of the fishermen. Several of the surrounded cotholds had to be evacuated and many traveled to other Holds and Weyrs seeking shelter.
Jaquin did what he could to help with the wounded, then joined one of the evacuee ships headed for Ista Weyr. The Healers were stretched thin, making him the only one they could spare for the ship, though thankfully they weren't carrying anyone seriously injured. The next few weeks blended together in efforts to help the Istan Healers coped with the huge influx of refugees and injured. Once things settled down, he started to think about traveling back to the Hall to finish his studies.
That was when one of the riders approached him about becoming a candidate. This shocked him completely. With his bad luck, he'd never expected something like this might happen to him. While he had his doubts, given what he'd heard about hatchings and the dangers, he decided to accept. He lived at Ista happily for several turns, continuing his Healer studies under the Weyr's Healers as well. He stood for many Hatchings, but was always passed over by the young dragons. Unfortunately, true to his luck, he rarely went to a Hatching without earning a new cut or bruise. Thankfully most of these were minor, but he was gaining something of a reputation for attracting mauling injuries.
(Spring 17) Shortly after his 16th turnday, Jaquin stood for a large Hatching with his usually apprenhension and excitement. He was used to the odd injury by now, and didn't really expect anything more than that. What happened, was so much worse. It started out like any other hatching, then quickly dissovled into blood, screams and chaos. Jaquin could barely tell what was going on as candidates tried to escape violent claws and fangs. He found himself frantically to stop the bleeding on a boy, barely twelve turns old, who had just come to his first Hatching. Jaquin knew from the amount of blood and the location of the wound that it was probably far too late, but the pleading and desperation in the boy's eyes made him try anyway. Sadly, as Jaquin had known, the boy bled out within moments.
He barely had time to recover from the shock, before a blue hatchling charged him down. It poor thing was driven mad by the sight of his chosen rider dead in Jaquin's arms and took out its fury on the poor apprentice healer. Jaquin felt the claws rip into his arms and side even as he tried to shield himself. He collasped from the pain and was sure the hatchling would have killed him, but he was saved by the poor creature finally crying out in sorrow and jumping between.
Jaquin couldn't remember the rest of the hatching. He'd been carried off by the Healers was out of it for hours before he even woke up. In the end, he was lucky. The slashes on his arms were deep, but had caused no permenant damage and he'd managed to avoid any deep punctures to his chest or stomach. As long as he recovered from the blood loss and avoided serious infection, the Healers expected he would make a full recovery. Many others were not so lucky. Seven had died, including some he had considered friends, and still more were seriously injured. It was one of the worst days in Jaquin's life, and he'd seen some pretty bad days.
(WI 17) Once Jaquin recovered from his injuries, he felt it was time to move on. It seemed like his bad luck really did follow him everywhere. No one at Ista blamed him for the tragedy of course, but he couldn't help feeling somehow responsible. He couldn't change what happened, but he thought maybe if he went somewhere else he might at least be able to heal from the memories. He eventually opted to transfer to Dalibor Weyr. Since the already had a reputation for violent hatchings and other such things, he figured no one would notice if he brought a little more bad luck with him.

Please, PLEASE maul him! The more bad luck, the better! XD Though I would prefer if he were still after to Stand afterwards (though long recoveries and scars are fine!)
