Welcome
Dalibor is a semi-canon Dragonriders of Pern site. No knowledge of the series or site is required to join; players of all experience levels are welcome here. Founded in 2008 on Proboards and moved to Jcink in 2013, Dalibor has been running for nine years.

Winter, 18th Turn, 11th Pass

Upcoming Flights/Runs:

Upcoming Hatchings:

While not unnatural in its violence, the dual hatching of Copper Queens Laanasuth, and Zelsk, has brought many changes Pernwide to the Dragon Candidate program. Raising the Age of Candidacy, and laying more rigorous emotional requirements on those admitted into the program and permitted to stay after. Dalibor has settled into an easy peace with the hatching fading into memory and young dragonets and wherets visible as they come into their own.

Included in their ranks are two colours new to Pern. Indigo dragons, and Pink whers, as well as Dalibor's first instance of a dual-bonded Wherhandler. As always, the West seems eager to produce weirdness for the rest of Pern.

Curiously, a steady flow of messengers seem to be traveling between Grove and Dalibor Weyr during the early sevendays of the new season; which is already proving to be milder than some in Dalibor's recent history.

He needed to stop coming here so often. Of course, where else was he to go? It was likely to be another Turn until he saw another hatching, and so he had been wandering about the Weyr-appearing rather forlorn-since having walked off the hatching sands. None of Sanarth's young had chosen him, and he had been sort-of mauled by the red at Rivath's. He had been hopeful. He really had been. He would just have to keep on hoping until there were more eggs upon the Sands. It was easier... having people to talk to. He wasn't a very personal individual, as both A'dran and Rome well knew. He said very little, at least where his own affairs were concerned. He was afraid of judgment, which was exactly what he felt was happening--he was being judged by every dragonet that hatched.

It was cold at the lake, but maybe there would be someone else who'd had the same idea as him; to come here and think awhile. He had met Candi here, and sorta had his first meeting with Rome here. As far as he was concerned, the lake was somehow the only non-cursed place. Everywhere else bad things happened. (Not that getting bit by Candi's dog had been a good thing). He felt bad for kicking the yappy creature, but he didn't do well when beings of any kind invaded his space. He was getting used to A'dran, though the contact between them had been simple up until this point.

Everything involved slow steps. He was trying to piece together the past, and what it meant for his future. He was trying to move on. Yes, this next turn of candidacy would be about change. He needed to be a different person--a better person--if he was going to make it through to his final turn of candidacy. He'd be coming up on twenty-two after the next hatching, if he didn't impress. If I don't impress, he thought to himself, dragging his cold hand over the bark of the large, overhanging, tree nearest him. He stopped, examining the grooves in the wood. He could do this, couldn't he? He could change?

It was the first time she'd tried climbing again since before her transfer. And she'd enjoyed it. At the moment, she was sitting on one of the middle branches of one of the oldest trees in the bowl, watching the people below going about their business. She was a bit frustrated with her progress since being released from quarantine. After getting as sick as she had, her endurance had definitely taken a bit of a nosedive.

And she was getting used to her new Red, though it was sporadic and sometimes they didn't get along. More often than not, actually. But for this moment, Shay had settled with attempting to drape herself across her girl's shoulders. It didn't quite work, given that she was still so young and a bit small herself, but she tried. This was her girl, and she had to make it known.

Adaya looked down and spotted someone under her tree. That someone looked a bit down, she noticed. Her legs swung as she watched him, thinking about whether or not to show herself. She decided that it wouldn't hurt, and began climbing back down. She was only a branch or two above the lowest ones, the large, thick branches that could easily hold her weight, when she laid down on one. She laid down on her stomach and rested her cheek on one hand. With the other, she plucked a twig from the tree and dropped it, aiming for it to land on the other person's shoulder or hand or something that would get his attention. Maybe she could get him to join her in the branches, or something else to make his face look a bit nicer.

Shay didn't appreciate the change in position that pushed Adaya's head against her shoulders, effectively squishing the poor Red. Shay squeaked her displeasure and squirmed out from her squashed position, chittering angrily.

Sorry, Adaya told her silently. The angry little thing chittered some more as she flew in a circle once before slipping into the pocket Adaya had requested in her new pair of trousers. The old ones had been getting too short. She'd actually requested it for this particular reason. She'd learned flits didn't often stray far from their person until they could hunt on their own, so the pocket was a place for Shay to hide if she wanted to. If the twig hadn't caught the other person's attention, odds were Shay's angry chittering had.

Embry had failed to look up. If he had, he might have noticed the girl seated on a branch above his head. So lost was he in his own head that he didn't hear the movement overhead. Adaya shifted position, and in doing so she caught another's attention. The ice howler pup, who had been playing in the snow nearby, came rushing on over. She gave a loud bark, alerting Embry to the presence of the girl. Adaya's twig reached the young man before Sacha did. He started, jumping back whilst brushing himself off. He suspected that a bug had fallen on him, but when his wide-eyed gaze met Adaya's he calmed considerably. "Oh..." he muttered, trying to keep the nasty comments in his head from escaping. Maybe the girl hadn't done it on purpose. She could have at least announced herself sooner than now. She appeared young, and so there was little sense in telling her off. Instead he sighed, dropping the tension in his shoulders.

Sacha barked only the once, coming to stand alongside her companion. She tilted her head to the side, bright blue eyes fixated upon the girl. Why ever was she up in that tree? Didn't it make more sense to be on the ground? Curious... Humans didn't always make sense. The pup knew that Embry didn't make sense a lot of the time. Her boy was impulsive, and so she was left struggling to keep up a lot of the time. She was never bored, that much could be said.

The ex-Trader knelt down in the snow, placing a hand upon his ice howlers golden head. He gave her a hearty pat before smoothing down her fur. Shards, she had a thick coat. The older she got the more prominent her coat became. The colors were rich, and stood out against the blanket of snow all around them. "Hiding from something?" he murmured, supposing that he had to speak up sometime. It would be rude to ignore the girl, even if that's what he'd prefer to do. In fact, it would have been easier to just keep on walking. He was trying to turn over a new leaf. Being nice to people was a part of that... leaf.

Sacha's tongue flopped out to the side, curious about Adaya despite the boys pets. Not easily distracted, the pups focus was set. She could smell the girls flit, having caught a glimpse of the red during her aerial maneuver. She had seen many flits in her short life, most of them right here at the Weyr. There were rainbows of colors flashing past her vision each and everyday, and so Sacha had gotten rather used to them. She was a rather fearless creature besides, taking well to most other animals (big or small). Someday she would be big and strong, and better able to protect her boy.

When he finally looked up, she gave him a small smile. He asked if she was hiding, but he wasn't looking. It was one of those moments when she had to speak. Sometimes it was hard to speak, even just one word. But today didn't seem to be one of those days.

"It's fun," she said simply, following her word up with a little laugh. What would Renna think if she saw this? This odd moment of her up a tree, and this stranger on the ground talking to her. She also enjoyed watching what was going on, seeing how busy the weyr could be despite the cold. Maybe she could get him to join her. Maybe that would make him look a little more happy. And even though Shay hadn't liked being squished, Adaya could feel the Red in her mind. Despite the angry, violent nature of Reds, Shay was also being supportive in her own way. In the Do this or I'll bite you way, but still. Sometimes that was what she needed, the sharp support that didn't offer a chance to deny. As opposed to the soft support of her siblings saying that she could do anything at her own pace.

She pushed herself back into a sitting position, straddling the branch, and tilted her head to one side. She smiled and held out her hand as way of invitation. He should climb too, to see why she enjoyed it so much.

Being as high up a tree as you can get... Being as close to the sky as possible... It was almost like flying again, if she closed her eyes. That was why she really liked it. But until now even the thought of flying had made her heart ache.

Embry had trouble talking to people too, but for different reasons. Adaya would likely never know those reasons--seeing as no one else did. He, too, was unlikely to discover what ailed the dragonless girl. She declared that it was fun, and in that moment he looked up. She kept shifting her position upon the branch, her legs now hanging over either side. Embry narrowed his eyes skeptically, but kept his opinion to himself. What could possibly be fun about sitting in a tree? Children did like to play games, so he supposed it made sense. Even so, he was too old for games.

Sacha lowered head, and then raised it up again, butting the boys hand with her snout. The ice howlers cold nose shoved against Embry's open palm. He pulled back from the pup, draping his arms over his legs. The girl was smiling at him, which was most peculiar. Why did people always demand on being nice to him? It made it a lot harder to convince himself that he hated them. The younger girls next action puzzled him, beyond belief. She held out her hand. What in Faranth's name was she doing?

Embry's eyes flickered over the snowy landscape, attempting to locate a twig. She wanted the twig back... didn't she? It was the only thing that made sense to him, because what stranger offered their hand to another. Every fiber of his being told him that Adaya had invited him up into the tree, and yet every fiber of his being was screaming no. What a weird request. So rather than accept or deny her offer, Embry searched for the lost twig.

Ah, there it was... Embry placed his hands on his knees and pushed himself up. Then he walked the pace or two to where the gnarled twig had come to rest. It had landed on his shoulder and been effectively shaken off. Leaning down, the dragon candidate picked the stick up, taking a giant step forward in order to reach Adaya's outstretched hand. He didn't know what to say, and so he said nothing.

Sacha was soon at his side again, pawing at his leg. He frowned down at the golden and white pup, feeling as if she was forcing this social engagement. "Is sitting in trees really your definition of fun?" He wouldn't know fun if it came along and smacked him upside the head. He didn't know how to have fun. Even as a child, he had lacked the ability to enjoy most things.

Just who was this strange girl exactly? He was terrible at telling peoples ages, and so for a moment he wondered if she'd escaped from the creche. She looked a bit too old to be a weyrbrat though. He couldn't see her shoulder knots from here--if she had any.
