Cyan Beavaeth
Amber Era

Upcoming Hatchings:

With Mutorin of Dalibor's discovery that a number of plants found in the southern jungles can be used as a remedy to stave off the worst of the still unnamed 'plague' the fatalities seem to have tapered off. Most of Dalibor's ill have recovered, if only in time to mourn their losses. Even still a number of Dalibor's wings and prides have seen fit to transfer away following their recovery, as if the Weyr itself was responsible for such a disastrous event - not realizing the plague was spread to the far reaches of Pern by a handful of persons that broke the quarantine in their delirious state.

All things considered life is moving forward calmly for the denizens of Dalibor Weyr and its beholden Holds. Western Hold welcomes new blood in the form of a young couple, Lord Holder Basasius and Lady Holder Baria. Only time will tell what the new Lord and Lady Holder will bring to their Hold, but all are hoping for none but good fortune.

Winter had come once more, and with it snowfall. Savanna walked along the well trodden path through the bowl, No and Smee trailing along dutifully behind her. Today, she was ten turns of age. She had to go speak to the candidatemaster, Al'dr, about becoming a candidate. It was her birthright, as a child of two dragonriders. Just as it had been An'del's. Only he had Impressed already. He Impressed a viridian last hatching, though she'd yet to meet the dragon. An'del always managed to get everything first. It was a fact that had always rankled the blond girl some, yet at the same time, did it really matter? So much had happened since they were children and Aren--she'd always think of him as Aren, despite his Impression--had gone about trying to Impress or bond every pillie in sight. He even had an icehowler, something she was dying to have one of--though she'd been lucky enough to grow up with Arceus. Still, he was Aren's, not hers. She probably cared more about that than about the fact he had a dragon. She not-so-secretly loved icehowlers, but she also wanted to have a bigger feline someday. All she presently had, and had ever had, were two pillies. Still, the yellows had always been enough for her. She wasn't fooling herself into thinking more pets would fix anything. Even now that she was toying with the idea of an icehowler and a couple more pets down the line, she wasn't feeling driven to figure out when the next hatchings would be.

It was her turnday, again. The past few she hadn't wanted to bother doing anything. She'd gotten no gifts, had no recognition outside of the fact that Aren might have tried to seek her out, for all she knew. She hid away on those days, missing her mother, missing what her father had been, and being upset at her brother--when it was her who hid from him now, and not the other way around. Ten was a momentous age for many on Pern. The age a craft could be chosen, or a weyrborn child could choose to be a candidate. She hadn't even announced her choice to Stand. She knew that they'd tell her to go see Al'dr, and so here she was. No fanfare was needed, and no one need know of her decision. Would Aren have chosen to Stand, given all that had happened with their father? She couldn't even say she knew that much.

As if thinking was enough to bring her brother there in person...he would probably know how to between and fly now. She hadn't been precisely keeping track of the clutch's ages, but she knew enough to know they'd hatched end of spring and would be old enough to be flying with their riders at this age. She was wrapped up in her thoughts, listening to the faint sound of snow crunching underneath her wher-hide, fur lined boots. She didn't know what direction she wanted her life to go in. She'd chosen to Stand because that seemed like what she ought to do. Her father should have been a rider. Her mother had been. And now her brother was. What other option was feasible, when she had no solid interests? Did she want to Impress? Had Aren? She wasn't even sure she knew the answers to that. Still, even turns later, she hadn't sorted things out. It was frustrating, but at least for the first time in many turns, she'd picked something of her own volition.

So lost in thought was she, that she barely noticed others passing by, be they human, dragon, wher or otherwise. It was no surprise that, as though to think of him might have very well brought him there, she didn't see her brother until he announced himself...

***Hope that last is okay, just figured it would be a good way to get them interacting if she 'ran into' him and he said something. I can change if need be, or just post if it's okay!***

Arceus found her first.

How couldn't he recognize the girl he'd known for all eight turns of his life? He might not have understood all the family problems that had happened, but he knew the blond woman had gone. Pain had happened, and his boy had needed him more than ever. Now there was a big spicy-smelling beast that basically ignored him, and his boy...well his boy wasn't quite so needy. The sister though? He could just tell that something was off, so as soon as he'd seen her he'd grabbed Aren's hand in his mouth and tugged before loping after Savanna.

Aren had hesitated, his boots digging into the snow and his eyes instead going over to the lake where Gan's headknobs and eyeridges were barely visible poking out of the waterfall-churned water. Would it ever get too cold for him to try and squeeze into that sharding cave? Why wasn't he right here, trying to be supportive and useful? The boy sighed and kicked his feet in earnest. The Viridian would just tell him that everything was as it should be with the natural order and blah, blah, blah, blah.

Aren had to take care of his own problems, the dragon wasn't there to hold his hand, only to let him know everything would be okay no matter what because they had each other, and unlike the majority of his family--the dragon wasn't going anywhere. A little dark thought nagged at him that his father's dragon had gone somewhere, but Gan had said that was an unnatural thing, and it had been taken care of swiftly--if violently.

The boy sighed a full-bodied childish sigh that left him bent backwards staring up at the falling flakes of snow. Fiiiiiiiiiine, he seemed to whine, taking off after the Howler and following the footprints left by his sister in the snow. Arceus reached her first, bounding a few feet ahead like a black shadow lost in the bright grey-skied dull of winter. A stark misfit. Aren came up a few seconds later, all at once shy and uncertain. He kicked at the snow as if it'd hurt him in some way before squinting at his twin.

"Hey, Sanna," he said softly, defaulting almost without thought to the name he'd called her since he could first speak and hadn't been able to pronounce all the complicated parts. "We pick our weyrs soon. Gan won't fit in our old weyr. We tried already. They have it listed as 370 near the Infirmary," the boy shrugged as he was prone to do, and he was babbling as he sometimes did. "Just worked out that way I suppose. Dad, well he lived there for a long time after she died, and then moved out. I saw him at the hatching with some...some guy." The boy bristled visibly, his hands clenching. None of that made any sense to him anyway so he didn't even know why he brought it up.

"Where you going? I mean, you don't have to tell me you know."

It was certainly hard to miss the form of the black 'howler coming towards her, starkly dark against the shimmering white of the snow. She was surprised. She couldn't hide now that she'd been seen, and something akin to mild panic caused her heart to flutter, and her stomach to churn In a manner not altogether pleasant. She hadn't seen him since he'd Impressed and that was nearly a turn ago, now. Well, maybe a few months away, but still. Even before then, she had been hiding away, likely wishing to have somewhere like Gan's cave to go to to disappear. There was no avoiding this, though. Not now. As Arceus reached her, she realized how much she'd missed seeing him, too. She felt a bit betrayed by the 'howler, though even her young mind knew that it was hardly his fault that he was Aren's, and went wherever it was her brother went. She knew envy to be a pointless and bitter thing, and she didn't want it in her heart. Still, she only remembered she was truly lonely when she was faced with what she felt she'd lost.

Aren was there before she'd had proper time to carefully think of what to say to him. Yet when he spoke, his first words tugged at her heartstrings. Sanna. He was the only one to call her that. No one else ever had. He'd said her name that way as soon as they'd learned to speak, and 'Sanna' she'd been ever since, to him. She wanted to be happy to hear her brother say her name like that, and yet it was intermingled with a lonely, sad desperation to have all things right again, as they'd been when they were so young that he couldn't say her name properly. She realized that she'd been so caught up in his simply saying her name in that familiar way, and yet he'd begun talking. She was looking at Arceus while he spoke. Instinctively and without thought, she'd reached out a hand to place on his head. Some people found the icehowlers intimidating, or even frightening. To her, Arceus was family. But like family, he'd disappeared, hadn't he? Again, she sensibly knew it was not by choice. Yet a stubborn part of her, so hurt by abandonment, clung to this notion quite stubbornly, despite sense of reason.

She knew his dragon's name, and he was talking about how they were moving to a new weyr now. Yes, they would be, wouldn't they? Where was his dragon? She didn't see the viridian, and maybe he didn't wish to meet her. Well, dragons would be dragons. She'd never met him, but he was his own creature just like people were, and while she was a little upset at the notion he might not want to, she figured he'd a right to do as he pleased. Maybe Aren had told him to go away, though, so that he might talk to her alone? That was a possibility too, wasn't it?

They have it listed as 370 near the Infirmary.

The words registered. Aren was telling her where his weyr was. He wanted her to know,
then? To be fair, he had been stuck in weyrlinghood and could not feasibly seek out anyone.
Senior weyrlings got a lot more freedom...did he know what today was? The thought snuck in, unbidden. He very well must have. After all, they shared the same turnday. Then his other words registered, and the blond child went from stroking Arceus between his brows, to visibly flinching. After she died. She, of course, was their mother. The last thing Savanna wanted to think about was the death of their mother. Especially not today! Even as that last thought crept in, she knew that she was just looking for extra reason to be upset about him bringing it up. Today was like any other day, and her turnday hadn't mattered much to her--or so she'd told herself--in turns.

It was so like Aren to ramble like this, as though they'd been speaking all along and were just picking up where they'd left off. Still, they hadn't talked about that, had they? They'd never done so, and any time that their mother even began to be brought up, Savanna quickly changed the subject or excused herself, trying not to cry. Well, she wasn't crying now, even though her throat felt all tight, like she might if she tried to say anything. Smee and No recognized Aren, obviously. They both scurried over to the boy, reaching out with their feelers to lightly brush him. They had Savanna, but the company of other pillies was always something the pair wanted--and Aren had a lot of other pillies. Savanna watched them, as Aren continued to speak. She noticed as his fist balled up, and she looked up in surprise at his revelation. With some guy? Their father was with a man? Who was the man? Why was he with him? The way Aren said it, it almost seemed like he was with the person in a way that did not denote friendship.

She was ten, and old enough to know that sometimes men were with men in that way.
Growing up in a Weyr, you knew that pretty early on. That some men were with women,
and some women with men. Or there were men with men, or women with women. It was the way of things. Still, this was her father. She felt Aren's words like a slap on the face. A betrayal of another kind. What about their mother? Why was her father with a man? Had he forgotten their mother, and cast her memory aside like he'd cast aside his dragon, and his children? She felt her stomach tighten, and she did look at Aren, now. There was hurt, betrayal and not a little anger in her eyes.

Abruptly, he asked where she was going, and she blinked in surprise. Where was she going? Did she want to tell him? Some part of her rebelled and thought she could simply not. A part of her wanted him to go away, but a bigger part, the part that wasn't full of childish stubbornness, did not. He was Aren, her brother, and her true best friend--and somewhat rival--of her whole life. Her twin. Her other half. She'd missed him sorely, and the warring emotions beat at her. In the end, it was her love of him that won, even as she found herself speaking without having truly decided.

"To Al'dr," she spoke, allowing the weight of that to sink in a moment. Of course Aren would know who Al'dr was. Her brother and she would know most anyone in the Weyr, nevermind anyone of any import. The significance of it would not be lost on him, she knew. Still, even as she spoke, his words prior were eating at her. "Who is he?" Those words held an edge. He'd know her well enough to pick up on it, even if someone else might not. Who she meant would be clear, too. She wanted to know who this man was, if Aren knew. Not that she wanted to care. Yet she was feeling angry betrayal all over again. That her father was betraying their mother, but also betraying her, yet again. Why was it okay to go to a hatching with some man and yet he would not reach out and speak to her? The hurt in her face was clear as the silent anger.

Aren shrugged, his eyes listing back towards the lake, but Gan had slipped beneath long ago. The cold of the water barely registered on the dragon's hot hide, yet the boy could feel it distantly, like a memory he couldn't quite access. "Dunno. Some guy. Seemed like they was close though y'know?" He scuffed his boots through the snow, the noses of the leather showed signs of being scuffed in such a way before, or perhaps often. Arceus had paced a distance from them and was gazing out across the open expanse of white as if listening for a threat that had been bred into him--though he'd never met his mortal enemy before being brought South.

"Gonna be a Candidate? I'm glad," he answered her himself, pressing on. "Gan said one of his sibs almost picked you, makes me think something good must be coming, right? They're smart enough to know when they aren't perfect. They are perfect you know..." the young boy sighed softly. He'd been doing a little bit of growing, nothing like what would happen when he hit puberty in a few turns, but just a couple quarter inches here or there. He still seemed to slouch as if he didn't care, but talking about his dragon straightened him out a bit.

"I was so mad at Waroth for taking ma away, so mad at all of them, but Gan saw through that. I know I said some things, and then I stopped saying things, and I just need you to know that...well..s'not as bad as I though, right? I'm glad you've decided to be a Candidate, and we're gonna be at every hatching, okay? Every single one until your dragon finds you and we'll be rooting for you the whole way, and gosh...Sanna, I know you don't need me there but I want to be there. We've been together forever, even if we weren't always right side-by-side, and I'm tired of our family being in shambles, even if I was too mad to say-so before."

The boy fell silent at last, still scuffing his boots in the snow, though his eyes had drifted from the safety of the lake to latch on to those of his sister some time ago.
